Let’s take a closer look at what you can get.

SSE broadband explained

While primarily an energy company, SSE aims to be a no frills broadband and phone provider too. They sell just two types of fibre optic broadband, which are SSE Unlimited Fibre Broadband and the faster Unlimited Fibre Plus services. It still offers some ADSL services to those customers who cannot access fibre .

The standard broadband contract length is 18 months, unless it is purchased as part of a bundle in which case the deal may only be for 12 months. All broadband tariffs have a fixed monthly price during the term of contract with no price rises guaranteed.

SSE offers a Happiness Guarantee for all its fixed term broadband deals. This means customers who are not happy with the service can exit the contract before a 60 day period has expired with no exit fees or other charges. Otherwise exit fees are set at 37p for each remaining day of the contract.

What are SSE’s broadband packages?

SSE offers a range of internet bundles, although these are only available to customers who pay via direct debit. Bundles allow customers to add in extra services to their deal, such as boiler cover and home energy services. All bundle deals have a minimum term of 12 months and are available to both new and existing customers.

For the broadband with phone deals, line rental is included as a standard part of the package. Customers who do not have a call plan as part of their broadband package will have to pay for their calls.

Does SSE offer a minimum speed guarantee?

For new customers, speed is one of the main considerations for choosing a new service. So, how do SSE speeds compare? SSE currently offers two fibre broadband speeds of 35Mb and 63Mb. These are the fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) broadband services and are based on speeds measuring 50% of customers receive at peak times.

Comparing the packages and deals for SSE Phone

SSE currently offers three calling plans as part of broadband deals. These include the following

Evening and Weekend Calls
Includes calls to local and national landlines, as well as to UK mobile numbers, up to 70 minutes in duration. Calls have to be made during specific evening and weekend hours. As of November 2020, these are set at 7pm to 7am on weekdays and 7pm Friday to midnight on Sunday at weekends.

Anytime Calls
The Anytime Calls package includes local, national and UK mobile calls made at any time of day. This is only up to a 70-minute limit.

Anytime Plus Calls
The Anytime Plus plan adds on to the Anytime Calls plan international calls to standard landlines in more than 30 countries including Australia, Ireland, Japan, and the USA. There is a reasonable use policy which stands presently at 500 minutes per month.

What are SSE’s Broadband and phone deals?

These call plans are charged as bolt on options to broadband deals and cost £5 for Evening and Weekend Calls, £10 for Anytime Calls and £12 for Anytime Plus Calls.

What routers do SSE offer?

SSE offers a Technicolor TG589vac Wi-Fi router with all its broadband packages. This is a basic model but does offer the fundamentals and will be suitable for almost all households.

As well as dual-band Wi-Fi with 802.11ac support, you get gigabit wired networking. This means as well as supporting older devices you get the benefit of faster transfer speeds from more up to date hardware. There is also a USB port for file and printer sharing.

Customers with more advanced features and wanting superior performance may find this router a little lacking. The latest models from other providers like BT offer extra options and improved signal strength and range. However, you can always purchase your own Wi-Fi router to replace the SSE option if you need a better signal and more features.

What’s good about SSE broadband?

While it may not be the cheapest provider on the market, SSE broadband is good value for money when you consider the overall packages that you can get. Monthly prices are generally reasonable when compared to other major suppliers, and it does come with a few extras. The 60 days Happiness Guarantee means you can cancel for free if you’re unhappy, which is a welcome addition.

What’s bad about SSE broadband?

SSE has stopped offering the short-term rolling monthly deals which were available until recently, which is a bit of a shame. These kinds of packages are increasingly hard to find. The free router is functional but does lack some of the useful features that you get with routers from other suppliers. SSE also uses traffic management to slow down certain activities at different times of the day. This does not affect every customer but can be an issue for some.
